spin is a quantity that can be measured and just people don't know about it. It was first discovered by stern and gerlac in the famous stern gerla experiment. When you measure the angular momentum of the atom, you find that it either goes up or down. And so they're like, hold up. How is it possible that this vector can point in any direction?
