Ukranian National Identity During the Soviet Period

In the baltic states, it's also very much based on language. The same in ukraine. And they defined what traditional ukranian identity had looked like. So there really was an independent sense of who they were,. distinct from a sort of russian language and ethnic group. It was about when there was a strong sense of identity that soviet authorities viewed as providing a buffer against internal control. That's when they tried to break these groups apart through various means of of mass terror. But everything since 20 14 has done little to remove a lot of that perspective, rather than enhance it.
