Long distance runners had extremely high amount of slow fibres, 80 % plus. Aging results in a loss of the so called type to or fast fibres. Weight lifters and body builders have probably more fast fibres because they hypertrophe to a greater extent. As we grow older, we lose more of these fast fibre. That also contributes to this reduction in strength that we all experience as we grow older.
