It's very different from the sort of Thomas Mallory ideal adulterous romance being really beautiful and fulfilling. This is a Lancelot who's racked with guilt when he is confronted by religious hermits throughout the story. They don't glorify or romanticize his relationship with Guinevere. They say he's filled with lust. So that hit home for him. He started going back to church.
