Earlier books were about cities and the black experience. How did that story come to the fore in all this other stuff you'd written? Well, as I said, I was in the archive doing the work that I normally do and came out in history and being in the face. And because I'm trained in American studies, and I've always been an urbanist, when the conflict on the quad confronted me, I had the skill set to investigate.
