Tolstoy's Portrait of the Love of Power
Tolstoy's portrait of the love of power is just absolutely searing. He, and the contrast that's drawn here by Tolstoy about Ivani Leitch is that as his family life becomes less and less pleasant, he seeks refuge in the abstractions of his power. The story that I would recommend to your readers to read next of Tolstoy is a story called Master and Man which was published in 1895.
