The Disease of Kidinga Pepo
The pains which accompanied this fever were exquisitely severe in the head, back and limbs. The disease was sometimes believed to be a rheumatism but it's more general name among all classes of people was the break bone fever. A profuse hemorrhage from the nose, mouth and bowels on the 10th and 11th days preceded a fatal issue of the disease. In 1824 to 1825, an epidemic of Kidinga Pepo began in East Africa and spread to India,. One contemporary observer estimating that 95% of the population of one region was affected.
