Gettysburg: A Strange Place
The US was a kind of mosaic nation in that era. As it is now and as it probably always has been, but it was a different kind of mosaic. This was a very heavily settled area more so than than now probably. You can't have had more population 100 years ago than you do now. So Gettysburg had 22,000 people in those days. But the countryside around was very strongly developed mostly by German or Ulster families,. Scotch Irish, but Ulster, let's say. The barns were the most striking feature of all.
