The Difficulty of Debating Immigration
Immigration has always been a very, very tortured topic for the Labour Party. Sam and I were discussing the Mrs Duffy incident famously with Gordon Brown - which kind of symbolised this very difficult relationship. Why has Labour found debating immigration in a way which is common sense but humane and compassionate as well? It used to all be about the colour of people's skin. In the 60s, some disgraceful campaigns, including the Smethek Bio-election, based on skin colour, it's not particularly like that anymore.
