He's the person who's incapable of coming to this realization. I found his sense of detachment like a wall that he's built up to keep himself from feeling, oh li thot. This is the wall he's put up throughout his relationship with ann dowd ah and that's probably the source of their maritabl problems. And there's nobody better capable of being able to pull off that level of compassion and epathy than anne dowd because she just exudes it in a way that can honestly melt your heart.
