In 19 53, the year prior to the hearings and launch of the comics code, atlas had sold roughly 15 million comic books per month. In 19 55, the year after the comics code was put in place, that number plummeted to just a third, a 67 % loss in sales. Stan watched as companies were crushed under the weight of the comicsCode and the rising tide of anti coic sentiment. As things fell apart, martin goodman doubled down on chasing trends. And as the 19 fifties rest, stan saw atlas comics as a sinking ship, and he feared he'd go down with it.
