The fear of and the obsession with this new phenomenon called an unidentified flying object would reach a fever pitch during the 19 forties. A faciost american invasion suddenly seemed possible, possibly imminent. No wonder we started seeing things in the sky. After the war ended, the first rockets would be launched into space, breaking a previously permanent barrier between us and that great, black, shimmering firmament. We began instead, to revere and fear science with all its miracles made real. The 19 fifties held these dual views of science and technology: the giddy mannic, dopaly dignified, optimistic, futuristic gadget of a modern nuclear family, and the absolute dooms
