The Importance of Patient Blood Management
In 12 landmark randomized trials comparing restrictive to liberal hemoglobin triggers, all but one of them specified that they use single unit transfusions. So the data do support single units. We really use the same methods only to a more extreme measure when we treat patients who don't accept transfusion. For example, we emphasize pre-op anemia treatment. And now we've managed to reduce plasma and platelet utilization by a substantial amount with best practice advisories.
