The Dangers of the Berlin Wall

Most East Germans celebrated the fall of the wall and fled to the West, not because they wanted freedom, but because they wanted consumer goods. And what that reminds me of is in the United States today, if you criticize the economic path we have followed since say the accession of China to the WTO. If you say maybe that was a wrong turn, maybe we shouldn't have outsourced all of our manufacturing to China? The immediate response is, yeah, but we all have cheap cheap iPhones now. So shut up and stop your complaining. You have cheap iPhones. That's something that as a conservative in 2023 America, I can identify with.
