In June of 1697, Smitty claimed that his lawyer convinced him to plead guilty to Aline's murder. He said her body would show that he hadn't bludgeoned her, therefore maintaining his innocence. Now luckily the jury did not believe that and Charles Schmidt was sentenced to death for murdering Gretchen and Mary Fritz. But then in 1972, temporarily, like this didn't last forever, the US Supreme Court declared capital punishment unconstitutional. And so his sentence was commuted to life in prison.
