The Standard Model of Addiction Is Fundamentally Wrong
The standard model is we have a biophysical chemical dependency. And when the chemical is removed, we get an overwhelming compulsion to have to seek out the chemical. But if you actually track people, many people spontaneously stop being addicted. Most people give up their addiction in their thirties. We tend to think that certain chemicals are intrinsically addictive. So they get addicted to heroine but why not in the body? What's going on? Isn't there a biochemical lack and therefore a huge compulsion?
