The Crucifixion of Pratacius
Two martyrs featured in John Calvin's scathing treatise on relics published in 1543. Campion's play stages an unapologetically triumphal celebration of the relics. The audience never actually sees the relics themselves. They're presented on stage in two beers which form the centre point for the two choirs of clerics on either side. And by holding them up like this while their sufferings are recited, the scene works to present the martyrs broken bodies and instruments of torture like images for intense imaginative meditation.
