In neurosis perversion and psychosis, something happens in this model. The mirror is an example of us desiring as others. Using our likability based on how well we think we approximate the desire of another. That's the perspective that the mirror gets. It's not how do I look? The mirror answers a different question. How do I look from somebody else's perspective? And if you want to take the feminized turn here that happened in the 1980s, it was so damn crucial, and not just to film studies, but to broader social theory.
