The treatment differs on whether the women themselves were actively involved in combat or if they were staying more on the auxiliary side of things and working. There's a really fantastic quote by a Catalan anarchist militia woman, Conjita Barrecojado, which says we went as a man, we went not as soldiers, because we did not consider ourselves soldiers, but as a group, nine men of one woman.
