The Relationship Between Research Mathematics and Problem Solving

I'd like you to expand on one section of your introduction in which you describe a distinction, but also connections between doing research mathematics and drafting or solving mathematical puzzles. I have three categories and they're not completely well defined. They're a serious mathematical problem. The second category is the kinds of problems that show up in competitions like the International Olympiads and the Putnam exam. And the third category is the one that interests me the most is what I call mathematical puzzles specifically.
