The Downsides of the Military-Military Truce in Sudan
Alex Vatanka: We have what is essentially a mobster shootout. Two generals, each of them head of their own kleptocratic networks. These vast, militarized, commercialized outfits engaged in all sorts of illicit and corrupt activities who basically want to run Sudan for their own personal and political and factional benefit. And yes, the immediate challenge is getting them to stop fighting,. But a truce between them would snuff out the prospects for democracy and would set Sudan back many, many years.
