In the Gospel of John, Jesus is told to kill a fig tree because it bore no fruit. The Fig was an anomaly and would have put out its starchy fruit just right with the leaves. It wouldn't have been the most succulent fruit, but it still would have been edible. He's not having a temper tantrum over a tree that shouldn't have even had fruit on it at that time of year. This is his Messianic pulpit if you will.
