The Subordinated Term and Ren'en's Liberal Mindset
Ren'en had to commit to the fantasy of objectivity by elevating the individual above society, race and culture. He associated the other with being ficund, with being a debased form of just pure sensation. And he would associate that with the orient. So part of the operation at play here is not only to create a constitutive other against which to proffer up the qualities of the insider identity. It is also meant to render transparent, to render invisible, those very qualities that are associated with the West.
