A Memoir of a Wartime Nightmare

Emily Cavendish met John's brother Lawrence in the smoking-room. He was accompanied by Cynthia Murdoch, his younger daughter. The evening passed pleasantly enough and I dreamed that night of Mary Cavendish. She volunteered to take me for a walk through the woods at lunchtime. We spent an afternoon roaming the woods, returning to the house at about five. As we entered the large hall, John beckoned us both into thesmoking-room. Emily saw once by his face that something disturbing had occurred. But he shut the door after us.
