The Saints were a minority in Illinois, but the state was divided nearly equally between Democrats and Whigs. Joseph Smith made it clear that church members would put their votes behind candidates who would support the freedom of religion. In December 1841, he wrote: "...we care not a fig for Whig or Democrat"
