Introduction

Sonia Boyce is the first woman of colour to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale. She was just 25 when the Tate made her one of the youngest artists in its permanent collection. As a child she drew incessantly and as an art teacher suggested she give life drawing a try. Her work has taken stories of domestic violence survivors to the Serpentine Gallery, voices of black female singers to the Venice biennale.
