LIGO directly detected the first evidence of gravitational waves confirming Einstein's theory 100 years later. According to general relativity, a pair of black holes orbiting around each other lose energy through the emission of gravitational waves. The event took place 1.3 billion years ago and produced 50 times as much energy as everything we see in the sky.
