Magellan was wounded in battle and distinguished himself as a competent warrior. He returned to Lisbon in 1512, but continued a correspondence with his friend Francisco Surau. If an expedition could find the islands and secure a trade route back to Portugal, it would be more lucrative than discovering the formula for transmuting base metals into gold. Magellan spent the next four years convincing King Charles I to fund a voyage west toward the Spice Islands.
