We use they and there, these pronouns when you don't know if the person you're talking about is male or female. If one of my siblings dropped their ice cream, a sibling is a brother or sister. I kept doing it as I grew up. So not just as a baby, but as she grew up, she kept being cooperative and thoughtful, helpful to her mum. She'd give them her ice cream. What a good girl.
