Is There a Time Delay in Road Traffic?
It takes them human reaction time, at least a third of a second, let's say, or longer, a few seconds often, to start slowing down. That's why, for example, brake lights are an important idea. And then there was the innovation of vino ten, 20 years ago, of having brake lights that were higher up on cars. Both of those mechanisms have to do wih reducing the time delay associave with driver reaction to cars and front slowing down. Because it's that time delay that eventually leads to the instability. It's a kind of mathematical fact, not totally trivial, i think, to derive f the enstability that develops as a result
