The Panic of Pompeii

A layer 6 inches deep descends upon Pompeii in just an hour. The sky became dark like night, the cloud had covered the sun and this is when people really realized something is going wrong. There was a raining down of ash and pumice, and this happened for about 10 hours or 12 hours. Can you imagine the sense of panic that these people are feeling who are just a few miles from the epicenter? This was a hellscape. Do you stay inside and just sort of ride out the storm hoping for the best? Or do you stay outside in this terrifying environment and head out? Others decide it's already too late.
