The Origins of Venice

Claire Jud de la Riviere is a professor of medieval history at the University of Toulouse in France. The Lagoon of Venice is formed by rivers coming from the Alps and waters of the Adriatic that flow in and out of the lagoon to the rhythm of the tides. To build a city, those early Venetians needed to find a way of making the ground more solid. They used wooden poles that they forced into the soft mud which are protected by the mud.
