Teresa's mother died when she was only 12. Her father felt unable to protect her the way that teenage girls were supposed to be protected from the advances of young men. She ends up in a convent. But this convent was full of yudadgo girls and even higher nobility. Some of the wealthier girls actually had sweets and servants in the convent.
