In 1988 her father decided he would bring the family back to New Zealand. Jess didn't want to come, she wanted to finish up her schooling and go to university in Perth. She had her heart set on becoming a journalist and working at a newspaper. Her dad was like, what the hell, where did you get the idea that you could go to university? No one in the family had ever been to university before. Only people who were from wealthy families went to university he thought. And her dad won.
