Rituals were meant to give meaning to life. What would otherwise be boring drudgery was invested with a meanig that transcended animal survival. In more sophisticated societies, the church and the theatre became ritual containers. Within the safety and confines of the mass, the individual could surrender himself to god. He could experience the magnification of his own spirit. We have lost our containers, and chaos is come again.
