Introduction
Habit building is the process by which behavior becomes increasingly automatic. William james made habits a centreiece in his magnum opus, the principles of psychology. If effort is the primary barrier to action, and repeated rewarded actions become more automatic, then building better habits is an essential tool. But many behaviours we want to turn into habits aren't enjoyable on their own. And this means they will never entirely transform into mindless routines. Many terrible books have been written under the misconception that hitting a daily word count is the hardest part of writing. It requires mental overhead to manage the complexity as well as focus to push through frustration.
