Vietnam is a proxy war fought over the large ideologies in lieu of World War III which I think everybody would agree would not be the pleasant alternative. The French knew pretty clearly that it was unwinnable in the mid 60s, it's just devastating information. And to sort of concede to the fact that the only way to make it look like we're winning is to have a bigger body count on their side.
