Is This Just an Expression for Dying That Existed in the Ancient World?
The phrase "gave up the ghost" was used by Josephus in an account of Judas Maccabees' death. John Sutter says it could be a euphemism for dying, or just human nature coming through. He says we try to make light of it, but deep down, we're all fairly concerned about it.
