The Genetic Basis of Intolerance

We had a lot of correspondence on this inside science at BBC.co.uk. Jago Tremaine in Norwich wrote: Has anyone ever tried to determine the genetic basis for narrow-minded intolerance? Does nastiness run in families? Over the centuries, gay people have caused far less suffering in the world than intolerant fundamentalists. We definitely need to know what makes them the way they are. It might be curable. I think that may be my favorite letter to inside science yet. Geneticist Tim Spector is on the line. He says any complex trait cannot simply be explained by either one gene or a set of genes or the environment - it's a mixture of both.
