Some actresses who had been pursued for the part of Catherine turned it down in disgust. Queer Nation activists requested a meeting with Verhoeven and Esther Haas to discuss their concerns over the script's depiction of lesbians and bisexuals as killers. In his book, he recalled this moment from the meeting: "I argued that neither Catherine nor Roxy were lesbians but bisexuals"
