In 2017, the World Economic Forum posted an article that said by 2020, the Bitcoin mining could consume the same amount of electricity every year as is currently used by the entire world. That calculation was grossly misstated, but that doesn't stop other experts from still stating such salacious headlines right now we're seeing in 2022. I think what they're missing is that the efficiency that the network is improving with Moore's law exponentially.
