The Cost of Slavery

Xenophon valued a healthy slave capable of working in the mines at 180 drachmas. A pretty young girl cost much more than an ugly old woman. Slaves with management skills were also extremely expensive. The average value of 16 auction slaves was 160 drachmas, which is roughly equivalent to what it costs to keep a slave for a year.
