In the play, yes, shakespeare smushes about three different things. The tribunes seem to be much more wily and to be really in control until things get out of hand. But the thing with corylinus is he's just like thumotic drive incarnate. And so coriolanus can't help but go for what gives him the most honor. Yet, on another level, he doesn't really seem to want it.
