The Pacific coast of South America and the mountains extending beyond have wildly different climatic and ecological zones. Within a day or two's walk, you can go from sea level to a mountain peak. The land nearest the ocean is effectively a desert with practically no precipitation. But as we climb, going between 1,500 feet and 7,000 feet in elevation, the picture changes.
