Not a single contemporary source of Sparta tells us this story. Plato and Aristotle are the interesting absences because both of them write basically utopian societies. And in those utopian societies, they mention eugenics as an idea. So if we were going to find it anywhere, I would expect to find it Plutarch, Aristotle. We don't. There is no child remains there, not one. The literary evidence is suspect and the archaeological evidence as it stands completely refutes it.
