The Importance of Collaboration in Science
CERN was created in 1954 with 12 member states, some of whom had been at war just a few years earlier. There's this huge push toward these large laboratories because the technology to produce the beams becomes necessarily so large that one individual group and eventually one individual country can't afford to build them or maintain them. The idea that it's a positive contribution to humanity has pervaded the field since I know a lot of people in the field who are pacifistic post World War II.
