The Utilitarian Position on Suffering
A humane beef farm or something is still going to involve killing animals who have relations to other animals that are at least seemingly going to be emotionally distressed by that. So, yeah, if you do all that, then it's difficult for me to say this is intrinsically wrong. I don't accept that the judgments that you make under hypothetical circumstances, which are not part of the real world, are a test of the underlying ethical theory. We also have a pretty strong intuition that killing humans, even in the conditions that I've described, would be wrong.
