The mainstream press was largely run by a handful of powerful men who controlled the media and therefore the national conversation. William Randolph Hearst, or Uncle Randy, as our favorite plutocrats apparently like to call him, had an audience that was unrivaled. He considered FDR's new deal to be communistic, socialistic, and thoroughly un-American. If Hearst ever wanted to bury a story or distort one, he often did.
