How Did We Get Stuck in Hierarchy?
In the pacific northwest coast, you have those cultures started doing their salmon economy about 800 years before they started showing signs of hierarchy in the archaeological record. Why is that? It's probably because before 800 before that time, people didn't have to be dominated. And so if you analyze societies with those questions in mind, that'll sort of unlock the mystery of the relationship between subsistence activity, surplus population density and hierarchy.
