Some of the world's biggest ships go through these channels to javalali. The reason that jabalali or coat city could, in various times, end up becoming centres of trade is precisely because they were politically protected. Duby has managed to keep a lot of those businesses in place. And so again, the fluctuations in the fortunes of these places has very little to do with what would be considered to be natural reasons, and everything to do with broader imperial politics that is imposed on the region.
